Pier Plugs

March 16, 2016

Fishing is a dynamic sport and success requires an open-minded approach steeped in creativity and seasoned with innovation. That notion applies across the board, but it’s particularly applicable to pier and bridge scenarios, where anglers often settle into the natural bait cast-and-soak routine.

Nothing wrong with catching fish on live shrimp, baitfish or cut baits, but blending a more active element into your routine can yield impressive results. The motivations to try artificial baits include:

Tides: The scent of natural baits is what typically draws in the fish. But during slow tidal periods, minimal water movement decreases the impact.

Fishing Pressure: Busy weekends or holidays see large throngs of anglers packing the popular spots. That means a lot of bottom rigs from which any interested fish can choose. Hard to stand out in such crowds.

Quality vs. Quantity: When smaller and/or indiscriminate species such catfish, blowfish, lizardfish and even stingrays quickly swarm those natural baits, it’s hard to get any face time with the trout, redfish, snook and other top-tier fish.

The answer: Cast and retrieve a Bomber Saltwater Grade Super Pogy or a Bomber Saltwater Grade Badonk-A-Donk SS along the face of pilings to simulate the baitfish that more selective predators target. In deeper sections, try yo-yoing these baits with varying cadences.
